Frequently Asked Questions
Acknowledging the courage it takes to seek help, we understand that navigating the world of addiction treatment can be overwhelming. This FAQ section is designed to address common queries, demystify the treatment process, and offer insights into our approach.
How to choose an addiction treatment center in Minnesota that is right for you
There are multiple clinics and treatment centers that provide addiction treatment in Minnesota. Successfully managing a substance use issue often depends on finding the right environment for you or a loved one.
Addiction treatment is an important commitment that involves examining your life, your choices, and the influences that may support or hinder positive change in your life. Treatment sessions can be moving, liberating, and exhausting.
Some people require inpatient treatment in order to separate themselves from their influences and routines so that they can focus exclusively on recovery. For others, intensive outpatient treatment is a more reasonable and equally effective solution. Intensive outpatient treatment allows a person to maintain their home environment while engaging in therapy.
A treatment schedule that fits you
Inpatient or outpatient, addiction treatment requires a schedule of several hours per week to effectively confront influences and habits that have accumulated over years. If you enroll in outpatient treatment, you should be able to find treatment in your area that will allow you to stick with the process and schedule, with your choice of daytime, evening, or weekend hours. For example, at Club Recovery, we offer groups that meet during weekday evenings or on Saturdays.
Convenient location
Consistent attendance at treatment sessions is fundamental for success. Make sure that the treatment center you choose is easily reached by car or public transportation. Public transportation options are especially important if you have lost your driving privileges. Club Recovery is located across from the Southdale Shopping Center and convenient to bus lines. We are situated in an office building with ample parking, easily accessed and close to Highway 62 & 494. For those unable to travel, we also offer telehealth options.
A comfortable, supportive environment
Intensive outpatient treatment is a demanding and transformative experience. It is important that you feel safe and well supported through the process. Choose a treatment center where you sense that the staff is highly qualified, experienced, and professional as well as empathetic and supportive. In addition, a treatment center like ours that is small enough to allow you to develop close relationships with the staff provides familiarity and intimacy that many clients find reassuring.
Consider also that the clinic’s location or demographic orientation will influence the client base at that center. It is reasonable for you to seek a center for group therapy where you feel that your fellow group members will be supportive and help make you feel comfortable and welcome.
Our empathetic, highly trained, experienced, and licensed alcohol and drug counselors have successfully treated thousands of Minneapolis-area residents suffering from addictions. We have built a long record of helping individuals through rehab and renewal. Club Recovery provides intensive outpatient addiction treatment in a supportive environment. Please contact us if you have any questions.
At Club Recovery our clients join a group therapy of choice including options such as Women’s Group, Men’s Group, Mixed Evening Group, Day Group, Saturday Group, or Relapse Prevention Group depending on their schedule and preference.
The foundation of group therapy rests on the natural inclinations of human beings to create community and share experiences, as well as to rely on one another. This makes the group setting a powerful therapeutic tool for treating substance abuse, one that is as helpful as individual therapy, and sometimes more successful. One reason for this efficacy is that groups intrinsically have many rewarding benefits—such as reducing isolation and enabling members to witness the recovery of others—and these qualities draw individuals into a culture of recovery.
Group members are able to alleviate and work-through common issues that often accompany substance use including shame, isolation, depression, and anxiety/stress. Typically in a group setting a client will experience “processing” among group members. Here clients can share their experience in a safe, confidential environment and receive supportive feedback from peers under the direction of a trained and licensed counselor.
How the Group Works Together
New group members are welcomed into group with a short introduction and what “brings them into treatment”, followed by a warm welcome from peers. Club Recovery works hard to achieve a positive open and rewarding group dynamic. Clients who have graduated our programs often report that the cohesive group interaction was one of the most positive aspects of their treatment here.
A typical group session would include an initial daily reading or “grounding” exercise which enables clients to get comfortable. Then based on that week’s curriculum a counselor would lead group through a lecture, and/or handout exercises that reflect the material covered. Also, integrated into each group are individual client treatment activities. The treatment assignments and activities are received with warm, supportive feedback from the group. Sometimes, the group’s written exercises/handouts can be done collaboratively or in smaller groups as well, promoting interaction and connections within the group. As the group session nears its end a “check-out” can be facilitated where clients will share their plans for the next week as it relates to their recovery.
Treatment Agenda
Club Recovery’s Core Curriculum for Intensive Outpatient Treatment includes an 18 week rotation of subjects including: The Nature of Addiction, Medical Aspects of Addiction, Mental Health Aspects of Addiction, Stages of Change, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Techniques, Relapse Prevention, Spirituality, Family Systems, Living in Sobriety, and Aftercare. Also, embedded within these weekly subjects we cover topics such as: Resilience, Trauma Informed Services, Relationships, Vulnerability, Shame, Anxiety, Depression, and Mindfulness.
Club Recovery uses an integration of five models of group therapy:
- CBT Therapy
- Psychoeducation
- Skills Development
- Support Group
- Interpersonal Process Group
How Does Group Therapy Help Clients?
- Groups provide positive peer support and pressure to abstain from substances of abuse
- Groups reduce the sense of isolation that most people who have substance abuse disorders experience
- Groups enable people who abuse substances to witness the recovery of others
- Groups can provide useful information to clients who are new to recovery
- Groups provide feedback concerning the values and abilities of other group members
- Groups offer family‐like experiences
- Groups offer members the opportunity to learn or relearn the social skills they need to cope with everyday life instead of resorting to substance abuse
- Groups can effectively confront individual members about substance abuse and other harmful behaviors
- Groups instill hope, a sense that “If the can make it, so can I.”
Groups often support and provide encouragement to one another outside the group setting
The first step to determine whether or which treatment is right for you is a chemical health evaluation by a qualified, licensed alcohol and drug addiction counselor (LADC). This evaluation may also be called a chemical, a comprehensive or chemical dependency assessment. The purpose of the chemical health evaluation is to determine the level of risk you face due to alcohol and drug abuse.
If you have been encouraged to obtain a chemical health evaluation, or if you want to know what treatment options are best fit for you, it is important to find a qualified treatment center that can provide a complete assessment on a timely basis. We strive to schedule chemical health evaluations promptly as possible, often within a few days of you contacting our clinic.
Components of the chemical dependency evaluation
1. Background information
As a first step you will be asked to complete a written record of your personal information, including a medical and sociographic history. This information is designed to enable the counselor who will perform the chemical health assessment to quickly focus on understanding your needs. It takes about 30 minutes for you to complete the documentation. Nothing you reveal to the treatment center regarding your alcohol and drug use can be provided to any other individual without your consent.
2. Interview with alcohol and drug addiction counselor
The second step is an in-person or telehealth meeting with a counselor that is usually done upon completion of the background information. This meeting also takes about one hour. There are two goals for this discussion. First, the counselor will use the opportunity to conduct a thorough evaluation of your risk profile. The questions the counselor asks enable him or her to measure your exposure to six different ways addictive influences and behaviors can negatively affect you. This is known professionally as the six risk dimensions Second, the interview is a chance for you to openly share your concerns and your desires, questions you have about how to gain control over chemical dependency and what treatment options exist.
Based upon your individual risk score Minnesota regulations may recommend no treatment, outpatient treatment, or if the immediate risk is determined to be especially high, inpatient care.
- Nothing you reveal in these meetings regarding your alcohol and drug use can be held against you in court or any legal proceeding.
- Nothing you reveal regarding your alcohol and drug use can be provided to any other individual without your consent.
- There is no obligation as a result of the chemical dependency evaluation to follow the treatment recommendation.
3. Follow Up
Your written chemical health evaluation is then drafted, reviewed by our Clinical Director and finalized. Our staff will send you a letter with any recommendations. At your request, we can also send full copies of your evaluation to other people, with your written permission.
If you choose to follow an assessment recommendation for Club Recovery’s treatment program, our staff will help you get started. We will coordinate with your insurance company to obtain authorization, if required. We will also review your health insurance and payment options to provide you a clear understanding of your possible program costs. Completing insurance paperwork, obtaining insurance permissions, and reviewing your payment options may take up to seven days. Depending on your insurance provider once we obtain the necessary information and insurance authorization, our intake coordinator will call you and schedule an orientation appointment.
The orientation will provide deeper understanding of our addiction treatment program, an opportunity to discuss costs of the program, and a review of your rights related to treatment. Generally, the first services you experience as you start treatment here include an individual session with your counselor to discuss your goals and an introduction to a treatment group.
If you will be seeking services with another treatment program following a chemical dependency evaluation, Club Recovery will obtain your written permission to complete a referral on your behalf. With written permission, we send your evaluation to the other provider. You should contact that addiction treatment center directly for information about getting started in their program. We will also send the referral to your insurance company to authorize treatment with the other clinic, if needed. For recommendations such as education and psychotherapy, we will provide you with several options to call. If you decide to pursue those services outside of Club Recovery, privacy laws mandate that you will need to contact the organization yourself to schedule. If you need your evaluation sent out, contact us about signing written permission and we will send the records.
If you feel you might benefit from a chemical health evaluation conducted by one of our licensed professionals, please call (952) 926-2526 or send an e-mail with your contact information to treatment@clubrecoveryllc.com . The cost of chemical health evaluations are often covered by health insurance or public assistance (R25).
Benefits of Group Therapy for Substance Use Issues
Why do treatment programs recommend group therapy for substance use issues, rather than just individual work? Some people starting treatment may be nervous about the idea of joining a group. They might fear that the group won’t reflect their individual situation.
Knowing why treatment programs use group therapy can be helpful when working on addressing those fears and concerns. The U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s research and guidance indicates that group therapy can be more effective for alcohol and drug use disorders in many situations than individual counseling alone. We believe that groups offer unique benefits and opportunities that are different from individual counseling.
Standards for group therapy for alcohol and drug use disorders
Group therapy at Club Recovery reflects guidance from the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA). For example, the AGPA suggests an effective group should include elements such as evidence-based treatment based on ongoing research and incorporate the clients’ preferences and values.
Club Recovery uses Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing as our primary approaches to all our treatment services, which has been shown to be very effective in treatment. We also tailor our group therapy exercises and our focus of education based on the interests and needs of the individuals in our groups.
Ultimately, we recommend group therapy for most of our clients, because we see the benefits of group every day. In our experience, group therapy engenders a sense of belonging and support, helps develop listening and communication skills, provides the opportunity to talk openly with other people with shared experiences, and develops empathy and perspective. Most importantly, our clients report that group therapy helps them recognize that they are not alone in their struggles with drugs and alcohol use, nor with the challenges and benefits of sobriety.
For most people, an effective treatment program will incorporate a variety of treatment types, including group, individual, and family therapy. While group therapy is likely to help most people, groups are not effective for every person. An individual drug and alcohol assessment should help you learn what treatment is available and what setting for therapy would be most helpful for you.
Many individuals go without treatment for both substance use and mental health disorders.
This may occur due to individuals going undiagnosed, but earlier care may be provided with prompt identification of substance use and mental health disorders. Below are some self-screening tools that you may explore for yourself or a loved one struggling with a chemical health issue. These screening tools may assist you in determining the need for a chemical health assessment at Club Recovery.
Here are some useful self-screening tools:
CAGE is a commonly used, 5- question self-screening tool used to screen for drug and alcohol use. The CAGE Assessment is a quick questionnaire to help determine if an alcohol assessment is needed.
AUDIT-C is a simple 3-question screen for hazardous or harmful drinking.
AUDIT is a 10-item questionnaire that screens for hazardous or harmful alcohol consumption.
DAST-10 is a 10-item, yes/no self-screening instrument that was designed to provide a brief instrument for clinical screening and treatment evaluation.
Online Drug Screening is a service of Join Together, a project of the Boston University School of Public Health.
To explore other self-screening tools, including tools for mental health disorders, visit the SAMHSA-HRSA Center for Integrated Health Solutions (CIHS). This resource promotes the development of services to better address the needs of individuals with mental health and substance use disorders.
