Stress can be defined as a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances.

Stress and Addiction

It is clear that stress and addiction are connected. Research has indicated that stress is commonly correlated to the start of addiction and to relapse.

One very important aspect of recovery from substance use issues is stress management.

Fight or Flight

When we are stressed the body can activate it’s survival system, otherwise known as the fight or flight response. The system that controls fight/flight and it’s counter-system rest/digest is the autonomic nervous system.

Activating the Body’s Relaxation Response

There are many useful ways to activate the body’s rest and digest system. One of the easiest and most effective is belly breathing (aka diaphragmatic breathing).
